Historical Context

Křivoklát Castle began in the 12th century as a Přemyslid royal hunting lodge, perfectly placed above thick forests teeming with game. In the 13th century it was rebuilt in stone and quickly matured into a major Gothic royal castle, later strengthened and expanded during the Luxembourg era. Under King Wenceslaus IV, it became one of the most-used Bohemian royal residences, with defenses and living quarters fit for court life as well as the hunt. Around 1490-1500, King Vladislaus II reshaped the castle in late Gothic style, leaving the celebrated chapel and much of the silhouette visitors admire today. In the early modern period the grandeur dimmed, and Křivoklát became notorious as a harsh state prison. After an 1826 fire, the Fürstenbergs restored it, and it ultimately entered state care as a museum and cultural landmark.
