After five years of careful restoration and a £13 million investment, one of England’s most iconic Norman fortresses is set to reopen its doors to visitors on 7 August 2025 — and it’s more dazzling than ever.
This summer, Norwich Castle unveils its newly refurbished interior, marking the completion of a long‑awaited project that breathes new life into a structure that has stood watch over the city since the 12th century.
✨ A Medieval Gem Restored
Originally built by William the Conqueror’s men in the 11th century, Norwich Castle has served as royal palace, county jail, and museum. The ambitious revamp aimed to recreate the grandeur of its medieval royal past, giving visitors a glimpse of how the castle would have looked as a Norman palace.
The renovations have opened up the keep with new galleries, restored staircases, and improved accessibility. One standout feature is the reimagined Great Hall, now hosting immersive exhibits that showcase the castle’s turbulent history.
Norwich City Council and English Heritage, who oversaw the project, describe the restoration as both “faithful to history and inspiring for future generations.”
