Historical Context
Raised in the 13th century after Mastino I della Scala secured Sirmione, the Sirmione Castle (Castello Scaligero) became a linchpin of Scaliger control over Lake Garda—part fortress, part noble seat. Its swallowtail battlements and a keep rising above lake-fed moats made it a rare true water castle. When Venice took over after the Scaligers’ fall, engineers strengthened the complex and enclosed a crenellated harbor to shelter their fleet—the only surviving fortified port of its kind in Italy. The stronghold’s military role faded in the 16th century with the rise of nearby Peschiera del Garda. Restorations after World War I and conservation completed in 2018 revived its austere lines, opening ramparts and the tower to visitors and preserving the remarkable medieval harbor.
