Historical Context
Raised in the early 13th century, likely by the Moravian Přemyslids, Landštejn anchored the Bohemian–Moravian–Austrian tripoint and protected a lucrative trade route. Its core is pure Romanesque muscle: a colossal bergfrit paired with a residential tower and chapel, linked by a palace around a pentagonal yard. The Lords of Landštejn made it their seat; later, the Vítkov family and the Austrian Sternbachs held it, layering Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque updates, including artillery bastions. In 1771 lightning struck the great tower, a blaze that gutted the apartments and began its decline into romantic ruin. Abandoned, it drew 19th- and 20th-century patriots. Today, stabilized remains and on-site archaeology reveal both military grit and the refined life once lived within.
