Historical Context
Raised by Duke Bolko I the Strict between 1288 and 1292, Książ guarded Silesian routes so effectively it earned the moniker “Key to Silesia.” Hussite forces seized it in 1428–29, and later centuries transformed the austere stronghold into a grand residence. Under the Hochberg family, rich Baroque and Neo‑Renaissance renovations recast its profile, while Princess Daisy brought international flair. During World War II, Nazi authorities expelled the owners and folded Książ into the Riese Project, carving extensive tunnels beneath. Over time, the castle passed through Piast, Czech, Prussian, and—amid postwar upheavals—Russian authorities, before restoration opened it to the public. Today it presents a layered story of power, beauty, and survival.
