Historical Context
Hever Castle’s story stretches back more than six centuries, with its oldest surviving elements—gatehouse and walled bailey—dating to around 1270. In 1505 it became the Boleyn family home, and it’s here that Anne Boleyn’s early life unfolded before she stepped onto the national stage. Her relationship with Henry VIII deepened against this Kentish backdrop, and during the sweating sickness of 1528 she withdrew to Hever, fell ill, and recovered—an episode that sharpened the drama of her rise. After her execution in 1536, the castle’s fortunes shifted again: in 1540 Henry VIII granted Hever to Anne of Cleves as part of their annulment settlement. In the early 1900s, William Waldorf Astor rescued and transformed the estate, restoring interiors and adding showpiece gardens and a lake that define the visitor experience today.
