Historical Context
Construction began in 1785 as a summer residence for New Spain’s viceroy, but Chapultepec Castle soon took on a public life. It became a military academy and, in 1847, the dramatic stage of the Battle of Chapultepec, where young cadets—the Niños Héroes—fell defending the fortress. Emperor Maximilian made it his palace in 1864, adding a Neoclassical portico adorned with classical reliefs and refining its gardens and terraces. From 1882 to 1940, it served as Mexico’s presidential residence, its interiors enriched with French-inspired décor and stained glass by Champigneulle Fils. In 1945 it hosted the Chapultepec Conference, and by mid-century it transformed into the National Museum of History, preserving the nation’s past within its commanding hilltop silhouette.
