Historical Context
Born in the 12th-century Staufer era as the seat of the Counts of Wertheim, the hilltop stronghold watched a market town grow at its feet, which won city rights in 1306. Under Count Georg II, Wertheim embraced Protestantism early, setting the stage for religious and political tensions. In 1619, a catastrophic powder explosion badly damaged the fortress, and the ensuing Thirty Years’ War brought Swedish occupation and imperial bombardment that left it in ruins. From 1982 onward, careful stabilization and renovation—adding safe stairways and a modern terrace—preserved the vast walls, zwinger, moat, and palas. Today, the ruin’s scars and silhouettes narrate centuries of power, faith, and conflict.
