Historical Context
Burg Kreuzenstein (Kreuzenstein Castle) began as a 12th-century stronghold of the Counts of Formbach and passed to the Habsburgs in 1278. Its walls once echoed with the 1527 interrogation of Anabaptist preacher Balthasar Hubmaier. The fortress met its downfall in 1645, when retreating Swedish forces under Field Marshal Lennart Torstensson blew it up during the Thirty Years’ War. Centuries later, Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek envisioned a revival: from the late 19th century he rebuilt Kreuzenstein as a romanticized medieval castle, carefully assembling authentic arches, portals, glass, and woodwork sourced across Europe. The result is not a strict restoration but a deliberate historicist creation—part museum, part family vault, and a gathering place for artists and luminaries. Today its keep, chapel, armory, and atmospheric courtyards make it a beloved cultural landmark and cinematic backdrop.
