Historical Context
Bouzov began around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, founded by Buz of Búzov to guard a lucrative route through the Třebůvka valley between Olomouc and Bohemia. Through turbulent Moravian power struggles it passed to the Lords of Vildenberk and later Kunštát—and is widely cited as the probable birthplace of future Czech king George of Poděbrady. From 1696 the Teutonic Knights owned the estate, using it as a prestigious seat. In the 1890s Archduke Eugene of Habsburg commissioned a romantic Neo-Gothic rebuild that endowed the castle with its 58-meter tower, oriels, battlements, and richly furnished interiors. Confiscated by the Nazis in 1939 and nationalized after 1945, Bouzov became a beloved cultural venue and film location, and in 1999 it was declared a national cultural monument.
