Historical Context

Hotel magnate George C. Boldt began building Boldt Castle in 1900 as a summer dream house for his beloved wife, Louise. Crafted by the firm of G. W. & W. D. Hewitt, the six-story, 120+ room chateau embraced French Chateauesque drama—towers, ornate terra cotta, and a rotunda crowned by stained glass. In 1904, Louise died suddenly, and Boldt halted construction at once, never returning. For decades the island showpiece stood unfinished, weathered, and vandalized. In 1977, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property and launched careful restoration, preserving the love story while finishing spaces for visitors. Today, the castle’s grand rooms, indoor pool, and Italianate gardens rekindle the Gilded Age while honoring its poignant origins.
