Historical Context

Balmoral Castle’s story stretches back to at least 1390, when a hunting lodge stood on this bend of the Dee. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert rented the estate in 1848, purchased it in 1852, and soon found the existing house too small. With architects John and William Smith, and Albert’s close design guidance, a new granite castle rose between 1853 and 1856, crowned by its turreted clocktower. Interiors embraced Highland identity—tartans, stag antlers, and views to heathered hills. During World War II, Balmoral sheltered the royal family and contributed to the war effort by growing food. Today the estate spans some 150 buildings and expansive gardens; it remains a private royal refuge that opens seasonally. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died here, underscoring its intimate place in royal life.
