Aarburg Castle emerged in the early 12th century to control a narrow, strategic passage on the Aare. Sold to the Habsburgs in 1299, it fell to Bern after a short siege in 1415, ushering in an era of expansion as the residence of Bernese bailiffs. Its limestone keep—carved into the bedrock with walls up to 3.5 meters thick—was crowned with a tent-like roof in 1557, while the 1621/22 works added living quarters and stair towers and strengthened the flanks.
