Historical Context

Muiderslot Castle rose in the late 13th century as Count Floris V's hard-edged answer to commerce: a fortress planted at the Vecht River's mouth to police traffic, levy tolls, and control a crucial route between the Zuiderzee and Utrecht. After Floris was assassinated in 1296, his enemies tore the first castle down, leaving a scar on the landscape until the late 14th century, when Albert I of Bavaria rebuilt it on the same footprint. Over time, earthen defenses and bastions strengthened its role in wider regional protection. Then came a gentler chapter: from 1609, writer P.C. Hooft turned the castle into a Dutch Golden Age gathering place—part residence, part salon. After a stint as a prison and near-abandonment, it was rescued in the 19th century and became a national museum in 1878.
