Perched on the Woroniaki hills above the Styr River valley, Pidhirtsi Castle marries aristocratic elegance with a soldier’s poise. Built as a palazzo in fortezza, it once dazzled with theaters, gardens, and glittering salons before wars, neglect, and a mid‑century fire dimmed its shine. Today its weathered terraces and stately façade whisper of lost splendor, legends, and an ongoing revival worth witnessing up close.

Historical Context
Raised between 1635 and 1640 for Grand Crown Hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski, Pidhirtsi was conceived by Andrea dell’Aqua with Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan as a palatial residence wrapped in fortifications. Its bastions and moat crown the 399‑meter Woroniaki ridge, surveying the Styr valley. In the 18th century the Rzewuski and later Sanguszko families turned it into a cultural beacon—hosting balls, theatre, fireworks, and printing—amid Italian parterres, vineyards, and famed interiors like the Golden, Chinese, Mosaic, and Knight’s Halls. Looted in World War I, the castle later served as a Soviet tuberculosis sanatorium, suffering neglect and a devastating 1956 fire. Now part of the Lviv National Art Gallery, it is under careful restoration, its terraces, sculptures, and Latin triumphal inscription recalling past glory.
