Historical Context
Marienburg Castle was commissioned in 1858 by King George V of Hanover as a birthday present for his wife, Queen Marie. Designed by architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase, it became a masterpiece of Neo-Gothic revival architecture — an ode to chivalric romance and royal splendor. However, the royal family lived there only briefly; political upheaval following the Austro-Prussian War forced them into exile, leaving the castle largely uninhabited for decades. Despite this, its fairytale silhouette — complete with turrets, spires, and ornate halls — survived wars and neglect. Today, Marienburg stands as one of Germany’s youngest yet most enchanting castles, a monument to love, loss, and enduring beauty.
