It’s not every day Windsor Castle plays host to a full state visit — but last week, Britain’s most historic royal residence once again took center stage in grand fashion.
From July 8–10, King Charles III welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron to the United Kingdom for a state visit steeped in tradition and symbolism. This marks the first state visit held at Windsor Castle since 2014, and notably, the first of King Charles’ reign to be staged here rather than Buckingham Palace.
Why the change of venue? Buckingham Palace is currently undergoing major renovations, making Windsor — with its medieval grandeur and ceremonial prestige — the natural choice.
🎭 A Castle Fit for Diplomacy
Windsor Castle, with over 900 years of history, provided a majestic backdrop for a series of official events. Guests arrived through the imposing Henry VIII Gate to a ceremonial welcome in the Quadrangle, complete with guards in full regalia and a military band echoing off the ancient stone walls.
One of the standout moments of the visit came during the formal dinner in St. George’s Hall. Queen Camilla dazzled in royal jewels, while the Princess of Wales paid tribute to her late mother-in-law by wearing Princess Diana’s iconic sapphire and diamond tiara — a subtle but meaningful nod to continuity and legacy within the monarchy.
🌟 Windsor’s Role in the Modern Monarchy
This event reminded the world that Windsor Castle remains very much at the heart of British ceremonial life. Even as Buckingham Palace evolves, Windsor continues to carry the weight of royal history while embracing its role as a working palace.
For visitors, it’s a timely reason to see the castle in all its polished glory — the Quadrangle immaculate, the State Apartments gleaming, and the banners of St. George’s Chapel flying high. If you’re lucky, you may even catch glimpses of preparations still underway as Windsor shifts back into its role as the monarch’s stage.
📅 Visiting Tip: If you’re planning a trip this summer, note that some areas of the castle may still be set up for official functions. Check ahead for the latest opening times and ticket availability.
